The tapestries of Thoma Ewen, jewellery of Gabby Ewen, painted silk of Dale Shutt and fibre art landscapes of Catharine Timm provide a glimpse into these artists’ unique paths, distinctly divergent in technique yet remaining dedicated to the material lineage of textile art.

Vernissage September 13, 6-8 pm. The shows continue until October 6. The gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays, 11 am to 4 pm.

Artist talk: October 6, 2 p.m.
A talk about the Moon Rain Centre for Textile Arts, its projects and events, and the role that the textile arts play in the art world.

Materia Linea is an exhibition of works by international textile artist Thoma Ewen and young emerging textile artist Gabby Ewen presented in collaboration with La Triennale Internationale des Arts Textiles en Outaouais 2013 ‘MATRICES’, August 16 to October 6, 2013 (

Thoma is a weaver, using techniques that are unchanged since neolithic times and Gabby is a multi-technique textile artist who’s explorations in bodily coverings continue to propel her through spinning, dyeing, clothing design, jewellery, quiltmaking, shibori, lace making and beadwork.

This mother/daughter team has been collaborating since 1999 on highly engaging large scale community textile art projects, Culture-in-the-Schools projects and recently on establishing La Triennale Internationale des Arts Textiles en Outaouais as a recurring international textile art symposium held throughout the Outaouais region.

Parallel to this collaborative professional alliance each pursues her own independent career and creative artistic process, Materia Linea will provide a glimpse into these artists unique paths, distinctly divergent in technique yet remaining dedicated to the material lineage of textile art.

Dale Shutt is a visual artist living on Ile-du-Grand-Calumet, in Pontiac County, West Quebec. Her principal medium is painting on silk. She also works in the unique medium of woodcut printing on hand painted silk.

Dale is primarily self-taught. In 1985 with assistance of two grants from the Quebec Ministry of Culture, she began her explorations of the medium. Since then she has never looked back. Through the years she has used her medium to create wearable art, kites, framed paintings, large wall hangings and sculptures. Dale has exhibited her work in Ontario and Quebec, and internationally in Nagoya Japan, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Vermont, USA.

Dale has taught silk painting at Algonquin College Mississippi Mills School of Art, The Pontiac School of the Arts and through the Quebec Culture in Education program as well as giving workshops in her home studio.

I am a fibre/mixed media artist drawing my inspiration from my great love of nature to build unique collages.  This very creative process allows me to explore the use of textiles, fibres, paint, embellishments and stitching.

I attended the OCAD U in Toronto for the first year general program in 1972.  I have continued to develop and learn using new techniques and products by regularly attending courses and workshops with prominent mixed media artists like Sandra Meech, Sylvia Naylor, Rayna Gillman, and Gunnel Hag.

I am a member of the Ontario Craft Council, and was juried into their biennial Art Show in 2009.  I am a member of Studio Art Quilter Associates, and had a piece juried into Creative Force 2010 which is still travelling to Galleries in the U.S.  I have a piece juried into OCAD University Alumni Ass. Exhibition in Toronto.
